Primrose
What: Primrose (Primula auricula) is a charming, compact perennial prized for its clusters of fragrant, vividly coloured spring flowers in shades of yellow, purple, pink, and white, often with a distinctive eye at the centre. These early bloomers emerge from rosettes of thick, leathery, evergreen leaves dusted with a powdery coating called farina.
Best use: In the landscape, Primrose excels as a front-of-border plant, in rock gardens, and as a container specimen. Its compact size and early-season colour make it ideal for underplanting beneath shrubs or trees, where it can take advantage of dappled shade. The blooms attract early pollinators including bees and butterflies and are excellent for small-scale cut flower arrangements.
